Karl J. Friston
Encyclopedia
Karl Friston is a neuroscientist
specialized on brain imaging. He validate statistical parametric mapping
, an international standard for analysing imaging data and rests on the general linear model and random field theory
developed in close collaboration with Keith Worsley.
and is used clinically and as a surrogate in genetic studies. These contributions were aroused by schizophrenia research
and theoretical studies of value-learning teamworking with Gerry Edelman.
Friston keep working on models of functional integration in the human brain
and the principles that underlie neuronal interactions. His main contribution to theoretical neurobiology is a free-energy principle for action and perception (active inference).

Statistical parametric mapping
Statistical parametric mapping or SPM is a statistical technique created by Karl Friston for examining differences in brain activity recorded during functional neuroimaging experiments using neuroimaging technologies such as fMRI or PET...

Field theory
Field theory may refer to:*Field theory , the theory of the algebraic concept of field*Field theory , a physical theory which employs fields in the physical sense, consisting of two types:...

Voxel-Based Morphometry
VBM detects differences in neuroanatomyNeuroanatomy
Neuroanatomy is the study of the anatomy and organization of the nervous system. In contrast to animals with radial symmetry, whose nervous system consists of a distributed network of cells, animals with bilateral symmetry have segregated, defined nervous systems, and thus we can begin to speak of...

Schizophrenia Research
Schizophrenia Research is the official, peer reviewed scientific journal of the Schizophrenia International Research Society and publishes articles of original research, systematic reviews etc. relating to the biology and treatment of schizophrenia. The journal's 2010 impact factor is 4.374....
and theoretical studies of value-learning teamworking with Gerry Edelman.
Dynamic causal modelling
DCM is used to infer the architecture of distributed systems like the brain. Mathematical contributions include generalised variational filtering and dynamic expectation maximization (DEM) for Bayesian model inversion and time-series analysis.Friston keep working on models of functional integration in the human brain
Human brain
The human brain has the same general structure as the brains of other mammals, but is over three times larger than the brain of a typical mammal with an equivalent body size. Estimates for the number of neurons in the human brain range from 80 to 120 billion...
and the principles that underlie neuronal interactions. His main contribution to theoretical neurobiology is a free-energy principle for action and perception (active inference).
Awards
In 1996, Friston received the first Young Investigators Award in Human Brain Mapping, and was elected a Fellow of the Academy of Medical Sciences (1999) in recognition of contributions to the bio-medical sciences. In 2000 he was President of the international Organization of Human Brain Mapping. In 2003 he was awarded the Minerva Golden Brain Award and was elected a Fellow of the Royal Society in 2006. In 2008 he received a Medal, Collège de France and an Honorary Doctorate from the University of York in 2011.See also
