Prior to the release of the album, Katy Hudson (now better known as Katy Perry) had signed to a independent christian record label called Red Hill Records. After the releases, Perry had set up her website, with the same name talking about her album and promoting her album in her way. Most of the music genres are Christian

Stephen Thomas Erlewine from Allmusic gave it a favorable review, giving it three stars. He complimented her songwriting, mostly comparing it to Alanis Morissette
