Wilson was born in Southern California. He served a mission in Austria and then received a bachelors and masters degree from BYU. He later received his Ph.D. from the University of Utah

Wilson studied the history of universities in America for his doctoral dissertation. He has since studied academic freedom, the history of the coming forth of the Book of Mormon
