Keith Alexander Nugent (born 28 June 1959) is an Australian physicist. He is currently Professor of Physics
Physics
Physics is a natural science that involves the study of matter and its motion through spacetime, along with related concepts such as energy and force. More broadly, it is the general analysis of nature, conducted in order to understand how the universe behaves.Physics is one of the oldest academic...

X-ray optics
X-ray optics is the branch of optics which manipulates X-rays instead of visible light. While lenses for visible light are made of transparent materials that can have a refractive index substantially larger than 1, for X-rays the index of refraction is slightly smaller than unity. The principal...

 and near-field optics
Near-field optics
Near-field optics is that branch of optics that considers configurations that depend on the passage of light to, from, through, or near an element with subwavelength features and the coupling of that light to a second element located a subwavelength distance from the first. The barrier of spatial...

In 1989 Professor Nugent in collaboration with Dr. Stephen Wilkins pioneered a form of X-ray optics known as lobster-eye optics. Using the capillary structure found in lobster eyes, Nugent and Wilkins were able to design telescopes with a 360 degree view of the skyhttp://vic.aip.org.au/program/1997/november.html. This was initially planned to be used in a LOBSTER satellite which would, indeed, conduct 360 degree surveys of the skyhttp://vic.aip.org.au/program/1997/november.html, though never came to fruitionhttp://vic.aip.org.au/program/1997/november.html. NASA currently have plans to use the technology to view space objects and phenomena from the International Space Stationhttp://www.dpc.vic.gov.au/domino/Web_Notes/newmedia.nsf/b0222c68d27626e2ca256c8c001a3d2d/9f8eee1787665b62ca256ef4008165f6!OpenDocument.
