The 323727 square feet (30,075.2 m²) high school, built on a 75 acres (303,514.5 m²) site, was intended to have a capacity of 2,000 students, but due to the rapid population growth in Cobb County, the school quickly became overcrowded. Before the school was built, juniors, as opposed to freshman and sophomores, from Harrison High School
(the main output) were given the choice whether to stay at their current school or change to Kennesaw. Approximately 240 juniors decided to change—much more than expected.

Grand National Championships every time they have competed there— six times. It captured the Class AAA National Title in 2004. Its achievements were recognized by the 2005-2006 Georgia State legislative session. The Kennesaw Mountain band has also received the Sudler Shield. It has competed in the Western Carolina University
Tournament of Champions where they placed 1st in 2006 and 4th in 2011.

The Kennesaw Mountain High School Robotics Team was established in 2003 and has been winning a multitude of awards since. Information on these awards can be found on the team's website at http://kmhsrobotics.com/. The team is most well known for their winning of the BEST award at the Georgia BEST competition held at Southern Polytechnic State University and advancing to the regional competition, South's BEST every year of its involvement in the BEST competition.
Mane Link is the governing body of Kennesaw Mountain. They put on various events throughout the school year including the Homecoming Dance, Shop with a Mustang, and the Special Education Dance. Mane Link is made up of the Executive Board, Executive Committee, and Class Officers. Elections are held every year for Class Officers and the Executive Officers are appointed. Mane Link is responsible for creating and maintaining a relationship with the student body and community as well as maintaining all school activities.
