Kenneth Gustavsson was Swedish
photographer. Gustavsson grew up in a suburb northwest of Stockholm. From 1964 to 1967 he studied photography at the Fotoskolan in Stockholm where the legendary photographer Christer Strömholm was head. In 1967 he was one of the originators of the Saftra photo agency.
Gustavsson was published already in the sixties in the Swedish photo magazine Foto. Gustavsson’s unique ability to visualize both the vulnerability and beauty of everyday life characterized his work.
Together with Anders Petersen he portrayed the Stockholm slums in an exhibition at the Stockholm City Museum in 1969.
After a decade of little photographic activities Gustavsson was introduced to a new generation of photography enthusiasts by the magazine ETC in 1983 with a 16 page presentation. This became the starting point of a new flow of creativity. In the years to come Gustavsson made several trips to places like Ireland, Iceland and New York for ETC magazine. In 1984 he was also awarded FOTO magazine’s Photographer’s Price.
Exhibitions
Gustavsson had several one-man exhibitions at Gauss Gallery in Stockholm was one of the photographers that represented Swedish and Nordic photography at the following Exhibitions:
• ”Contemporary Black and White West European Photography”1987
• “PS1” in New York 1988
• ”Fotofest” in Houston 1988
• ”150th Anniversary of Photography” in Prague 1989.
The ”Indications” exhibition at Kulturhuset in Stockholm that showed some of Gustavsson’s contemporary work together with that of Christer Strömholm and Anders Petersen was a great success and attracted much attention.
Kenneth Gustavsson was a distinctive personality with great integrity who took his own road in life and had a rare ability to perceive the hidden signs and images that surround us wherever we are.
