The 13.94 miles (22.4 km) long line was opened in 1889, with construction of this line costing £39,229 by 1920, paid out of a loan advanced by the Victorian Government. In 1920 the line was controlled by the Kerang Shire Council, being transferred to the Victorian Railways
on 1 February 1952 and officially closed on 3 March 1981.

The regular passenger services on the line were withdrawn on 16 December 1976. The last train was a 102hp Walker railmotor
