The course was designed by William F. Bell, and opened in 1953. It is a full 18-hole golf course, situated on hilly terrain near the base of the Greenhorn Mountains. Various local tournaments are held throughout the year. The Highland High School junior varsity golf team plays at the course during the spring season.

The Kern River Golf Course also has one of two large reservable picnic areas in the Kern River County Park. It is situated on the east side of the course. There is no direct road access between the club house and the area, which makes it relatively isolated. It contains: 118 picnic tables, five deep pit barbecues, six grills, food preparation table, a bandstand, and two booths (one for tickets and the other for drinks). The area is lit and fenced. It also contains restrooms, playground equipment and a softball backstop.
