John also brought a whole-hearted enthusiasm to those things which brought him joy—his family, Duke basketball, music, his church and a large circle of friends. His wide smile and welcoming personality made him a favorite companion. The gentleness and kindness that so distinguished his public life made him a treasured friend.

John's legacy of his life and work remains with Kernodle Middle School. Kernodle will always remember and strive to uphold the standards of John R. Kernodle, Jr.

  • The North Carolina Middle School Association has recognized Kernodle Middle School as a "School to Watch". John R. Kernodle, Jr. Middle is the first Guilford County school to receive this recognition.


The "Schools to Watch" program is an outgrowth of the national program launched in 1999 by the National Forum to Accelerate Middle-Grades Reform. This initiative sought to recognize schools that were performing in an exemplary fashion in the three core areas identified by the Forum as critical for high-performing schools. These core areas are academic excellence, developmental responsiveness, and social equity. In addition, the Forum recognized that organizational and support structures had to be in place to support these efforts. In 2002, the Forum selected three states to continue the program on the state level; North Carolina
