Kesteren was a separate municipality until 2002, when it merged with Dodewaard and Echteld. The new municipality was first called "Kesteren", but changed its name to Neder-Betuwe

In 2001, the town of Kesteren had 4069 inhabitants. The built-up area of the town was 0.95 km², and contained 1330 residences.
The statistical area "Kesteren", which also can include the peripheral parts of the village, as well as the surrounding countryside, has a population of around 5020.
