Kevin Helliker

Kevin P. Helliker is an American journalist
and currently a senior writer in the Chicago bureau of the Wall Street Journal. He and Thomas M. Burton shared the 2004 Pulitzer Prize
for explanatory journalism for a series of articles about aneurysms. Among other investigations, Helliker wrote an expose of the budget-motel industry in 1991 showing that it attracted—and even catered to—drug dealers and prostitutes, endangering guests. A 1998 article about federal agents executing a search warrant with CNN
in tow contributed to new case law on the privacy rights of citizens subjected to search warrants. A 2006 investigation of Helliker's showed that a new test called ETG to detect alcohol consumption could result in false positives, and the article contributed to a federal warning about the fallibility of ETG testing. Miramax recently purchased the film rights to a 2008 article of Helliker's about a Kansas housewife who freed and ran off with a convicted murderer. Helliker has served as a WSJ bureau chief in Chicago and Dallas, an editor in New York and a writer in London.
