 poet. He is famous for deep rooted meaning poetry which mixes between Arabic and western concepts and structures. He had written many history tests and translated international books. He was knowledgeable in sciences as well as Arabic and French literature.

Motran advocated towards modernizing the Arabic literature and poetry and was a pioneer in creating new poetry trends away from the traditional Bedouin patterns which reflects the moderns days without compromising the strength of language nor expressions. He was nationalistic in his beliefs and he participated in many activities and movements that geared towards the Independence of the Arabic countries from the Ottoman and the French influence.

His Life

He is Khalil the son of Abdo Yousef Motran. Born in the city of Baalbeck of Lebanon on 11 July 1871. Had his schooling at the Patriarch School in Beirut. His Arabic language and literature teacehrs where the famous Yazigi brothers: Khalil and Ibrahim Yazigi. Motran immigrated to Paris in France where he was exposed to the French Literature. Then he moved to Egypt where he worked as a journalist in Al Ahram newspaper for many years. After which he published his own magazine called "Al Majalah Al Masriah" (The Egyptian Magazine) and the daily newspaper called "Al Jawaneb Al Masriah" (The Egyptian Frontiers) which was a strong supporter for Mostafa Kamal national movement. During this period, he translated many international books including Shakespeare plays. He had influential contribution to the creation of the Egyptian national theater. His efforts were recognized by the Egyptian government through including him in the celebrations of great Egyptian thinkers and literary persons like Taha Hussein and Hafez Ibrahim

His Style

Motran was a pioneer of modernizing the Arabian poetry and prose. His poems were characterized by its true intrapersonal expressions which is coupled with sensitive musical resonance. His prose moved away from traditional composition to a new modernized tales that reflected the style of the modern days.

After starting in the traditional poetry styles which covered wide range of topics, his later poems focused on the romantic topics which was filled with imagination. His style influenced other poets of his period like Ibrahim Al Yazigi, Abo Shadi and the Arab poets in the west. Besides romance, Motran was creative in including natural descriptive in his poems that mixes his sensitive feelings with his humanistic beliefs and romance.
