Plot summary
It is 1942, during the Japanese invasion of Siam. A young woman named Angsumalin, the daughter of the leader of the Free Thai movement, meets a young Thai man named Vanus, and soon they fall in love. However, Vanus leaves her, going to England to study, but hoping that Angsumalin will marry him. While Angsumalin is swimming, a Japanese navy captain named Kobori sees Angsumalin. Later, at a market, she is helping her mother when Kobori recognizes her. She refuses sell him her vegetables. When her father agrees with Kobori's uncle for the two to marry, she is forced to do so. Kobori promises her she will stay a virgin, but he gets drunk in the night and rapes her. Angsumalin never forgives him, but when Angsumalin discovers she is pregnant with his baby they soon fall in love. Vanus then return to Thailand, and the book illustrates the conflict between the two men.Characters
- Angsumalin/Hideko - Daughter of Leader of Free Thai movement who lived with her mother and grandmother in Chaopraya because her father is leader. She falls in love with Vanus who become her boyfriend and leaves her for England to study as Angsumalin is still waiting for him. She is swimming to see Japanese troops when Kobori met her at his boat because Proundlly Thai she refuses sell Vegetables to him. Later village makes gossip about Kobori and Angsumalin's relationship due this her father accused by Japanese Empire as Freedom Fighter. He forced his daughter to marry Kobori. After the wedding she legally changed her name Himeko as Kobori promise her not touch her however she raped by him at first night become pregnant with their son
