King Edward the Fourth and a Tanner of Tamworth is Child ballad 273. A ballad of this title was licensed in 1564.
Synopsis
King Edward goes hunting and sees a tanner riding a mare with a cowskin for a saddle. He tells his men to stay back and goes to talk. When he asks directions, the tanner answers him rudely; he then tells him he has more pounds than the king has pence in his purse, and that he does not want to travel or eat with him, and accuses him of stealing his clothing. They trade horses, with the king paying groats for the privilege, but the tanner can not manage to horse and his cowskin frightens it. He has to pay the king more money to get him to take the horse back. Then the king summons his men with a horn blast and gives the tanner lands.
