Inaugurated in 1981, the race is named for the village of Kings Point, New York
on the north shore of Long Island, New York which is home to the U.S. Merchant Marine Academy.
The Kings Point Handicap was run at a mile and seventy yards from 1981 to 1987, and from 1989 to 1995. In 1988 it was run at one mile.
The race was run in two divisions in 2002.
