The klivanion or klibanion was a Byzantine
heavy cuirass made of metal plates (scales) sewn on leather or cloth, with plates protecting the shoulders and the back. It is said that the name derives from the Greek klivanos (κλίβανος), i.e. oven, because this cuirass was getting unbearably hot under strong sun-light. It was part of the defensive armour of the Byzantine heavy cavalry.
