Knockaround was founded in 2005 by Adam Moyer, during his enrollment as a graduate art student at University of California, San Diego

. The company was first headquartered in Moyer's small art studio, and, following completion of graduate school, was operated out of his garage briefly before being moved to a warehouse south of San Diego.

Since the company's founding, its visibility in fashion-related media has increased. Most notably, Knockaround Sunglasses were featured in a Today Show style segment on May 4, 2009.
