KIAS was founded in 1996 and currently has three schools: Mathematics, Physics, and Computational Sciences. Its primary aims are to provide researchers in pure mathematics and theoretical physics environment to concentrate on their research without other duties. As a theoretical research institute, it has no formal curriculum, degree programs, or experimental laboratories. As of 2010 the institute contained a total of 23 scientists and 65 research fellows, with 36 in mathematics, 28 in physics, and 19 in computational sciences.
As its name suggests, this institute was founded modeled on IAS
in Princeton, New Jersey (USA), though unlike its original, KIAS is a government funded research institute. Currently, KIAS is a subordinary institute of KAIST
