Kota Damansara-Cheras Line
Encyclopedia
The MRT Line 1 or Sungai Buloh-Kajang Line (interim name)
is a proposed new line under the Selangor
and Kuala Lumpur
rail transit system. Announced in 2006, the line was initially planned as a Light Rail Transit
(LRT) at 43 km in length, linking the densely populated areas of Damansara
in the northwest and Cheras
in the southeast, through the central business district of Kuala Lumpur
city. However, the government is currently considering the possibility of extending the alignment at both ends of the line to Sungai Buloh
and Kajang
, respectively, and a new spur line from Damansara Utama
to Kelana Jaya
, adding 16 km to the line making a total 59 km. In addition, the system is now a proposed Mass Rapid Transit
(MRT) system instead, providing the much needed larger capacity trains for the densely populated areas that the line will traverse. Current timeline projection indicates project completion in 2016 as opposed to the original LRT plan which were supposed to be completed on 2014. As with the existing Kelana Jaya Line
and Ampang Line
, the new line will be owned by Syarikat Prasarana Negara and operated by RapidKL.
-Cheras MRT Line will be running through the northwest and southeast area of Kuala Lumpur
, with most stations elevated except for five underground. Initial proposed stations released in the media are to be located in:
The alignment, made available to The Star
newspaper, showed the new line running from:
“Kota Damansara
along Persiaran Surian to the Damansara-Puchong Expressway
and then heading towards the city centre along the Sprint Expressway
, through Bangsar Baru and Jalan Bangsar
. It will then run parallel to the existing Kelana Jaya Line
to KL Sentral, Central Market and Masjid Jamek
before heading to the Golden Triangle along Jalan Raja Chulan. The route will then pass Pasar Rakyat in Bukit Bintang
and then Jalan Tun Razak where it will join Jalan Cheras. It will continue along the road and the Cheras-Kajang Expressway to the Balakong
interchange near Cheras Batu 11. Passengers will be able to switch with the existing Kelana Jaya Line
at Bangsar
, KL Sentral, Pasar Seni and Masjid Jamek
; and the Ampang Line
at Masjid Jamek
and Maluri
. There will be around 30 stations along the line, including the interchange stations.”
Subsequently, it was announced on April 8, 2010 in the Parliament that the government is studying a proposal to extend the line to connect with Sungai Buloh railway station from Kota Damansara and Kajang railway station from Cheras. In addition, a new line from Damansara Utama
to Kelana Jaya
is being studied.
