The EMUs were classified in 1959 by the Japanese National Railways
(JNR) under their present name. Previously, they were called MoHa 12 cars from 1953 to 1959, and were also named by some alternative names (depending on the car) from 1933 to 1960. The KuMoHa 12 cars were manufactured from 1933 to 1987.
