The Island Chief of the Kunahandhoo Abdul Raheem Yoosuf said on Wednesday that some people had barged into the office, dragged out some of the office equipment and were trying to auction it off in the middle of the football field. He said that the people had done so due to a row over the possession of some balls between some societies in the island.
“It has been a few days since the problem began,” he said. “Discussions were going nowhere when some of them decided to take matters into their own hands and dragged out the equipment from the Office. They said that they would recover the cost of the balls by selling off the Island Office equipment. When we explained that it was a criminal offence and what the consequences might be, those that had taken the balls brought them back. Then they returned the equipment that they had taken from the Office.”
The Kunahandhoo Sports Academy’s Director of Sports, who is also the Island Office’s secretary, Ibrahim Shakeeb, said that the argument had begun when representatives from another society in the island had taken 12 balls from the Academy and refused to return them.
“We weren’t making any headway with the talks,” Shakeeb said. “Even the Police and officials from the Island and Atoll Office tried. In the end we dragged the executive chairs, fax machine, phones, and binding machines out onto the football field. We said we would recover the cost of the 12 balls by selling the stuff. What we really wanted was to find a way to solve the problem. There were some people who wanted to auction it off too.”
He said that they had arranged the stuff taken from the Island Office on the field around 4:00pm but when the 12 balls were returned to them they had taken all the stuff back into the Office and kept them back in their original locations
