Kurukkals were the people who prepared milk and milk proucts for temples. They mainly belonged to the temples in old southern Travancore temples like Sri Padmanabhaswami Temple, Thiruvattar temple etc. They have relation with the Gurukkal in North Kerala. They were the priests of Vellalakkovils in Kanyakumari and Thiruvananthapuram. There are Tamil-speaking Kurukkal and Malayalam-speaking Kurukkal. All of these may have migrated from Tamil Nadu.
