. In the past centuries, some members of Kaniyar Panicker families in north Malabar held the honorific title Nambi Kurup. Members of a section of the community, who were barbers and funeral rite performers of Kaniyars, in central Travancore were known as Pothuvan Kurup, Kani Kurup or Kurup, who were later converted in to Ezhava community by Sri Narayana Guru.
