Kwilu Province

Kwilu is one of 25 new provinces of the Democratic Republic of the Congo
specified in the country's 2005 Constitution (effective 18 February 2006), under Article 2. These 25 provinces were to have been created from the existing 10 provinces
within 36 months (18 February 2009), according to Article 226. As of October 2010, this had not taken place.
It is one of three provinces which was to have been restored from Bandundu province. Kwilu existed from 1962 to 1966, but in 1964 the administration was taken over by the central government due to a rebellion in southwestern Congo; rebel administration in most of Kwilu province from January 1964; reconquest by the legal government in June 1965. The provincial government was restored on January 18, 1966, but the province was merged together with Kwango Province
and Mai-Ndombe Province
to create Bandundu province.
The capital of Kwilu province is the city of Kikwit
