Kyoto International University (KIU) is a small, Christian, international university located in the cultural center of Japan.
“international studies” in either the international business or government track. The
experiential component of a KIU education makes it useful and distinctive because the emphasis
goes beyond knowledge transfer to skill development and attitude formation. For example,
business students visit major Fortune 500 companies such as Toyota and Panasonic or Nike
and Apple to apply classroom theory with real world practice. Experiential education extends
internationally with an international development/service learning trip to Africa. Domestic internships
and service learning opportunities round out the KIU student experience.
KIU’s main educational delivery model has been grounded in experiential education in the
Japanese marketplace complemented by the small and supportive classroom environment. To
simulate a professional global business environment, KIU leverages web-conferencing and other
asynchronous technologies to support the core delivery method of marketplace-classroom
experience.
Both classroom and distance education are available at KIU and directed by qualified as well as
dedicated Christian faculty.
Four-year undergraduate program offers a Bachelor of Science degree in International Studies (International Business and Government concentrations). Two-year undergraduate program offers an Associate of Science degree in Liberal Arts.

campus of Phillips University (Oklahoma, US). In 1989, Phillips University Japan closed due to
financial difficulties. Since then, KIU continues to offer courses that follow the basic syllabi of US
universities including the calculation of credits, the textbook and the general outline with some
minor adjustments made for the diverse student body. Since the closure of Phillips University
Japan, many KIU students have successfully transferred credits to US colleges and universities as
well as matriculated at MEXT graduate programs (public and private) in Japan.
As a small school, KIU provides a select and diverse group of students a supportive environment
to pursue their individualized educational goals while growing as 1) self-directed learners, 2)
effective communicators, 3) critical thinkers, 4) problem solvers and 5) responsible stewards.
KIU students (along with KIU academy graduates) often continue their undergraduate or graduate
education overseas as well as pursue a wide variety of careers.

The KIU curriculum is rigorous and challenges our diverse students to achieve their
individualized educational goals. KIU graduates and students have been accepted into a wide
variety of highly competitive and elite graduate programs.

University (Business), Harvard University (East Asian Studies), Kobe Women’s University
(Translation), Mie Prefectural University (Medical), New York University (Culture, Education and

University (Law), University of Edinburgh (Plant Science) and University of Nebraska - Lincoln
(Journalism).
