Encyclopedia
The L&T Interceptor class fast attack craft are a series of 36 interceptor boats (IB) being built by L&T Shipyard for the Indian Coast Guard
. The ships are intended for patrol and rescue operations in India's Exclusive Economic Zone.
Designed at the L&T Marine & Ship Design Division Of Larsen & Toubro Limited, the interceptor boats will have an aluminum-alloy hull construction with water jet propulsion for quick response. The interceptors are designed to perform surveillance, search and rescue, anti-smuggling and anti-poaching operations in close coast and can also operate effectively in shallow water. The boats are planned to be constructed at L&T’s existing shipyard at Hazira, and at its new shipyard coming up at Katupalli near Ennore.
The vessels are each powered by Caterpillar Marine Power Systems 2*3516C marine propulsion engines (2525 bkW @ 1800 rpm, ‘D’ Rating) and 2*C4.4 auxiliary generator sets (86 eKW @ 1500 rpm). MJP Waterjets will supply waterjets for the high-speed interceptor boats. Delivery of the waterjets began in 2010 and will continue until 2013. L&T Shipyard got the order on 22 March 2010 for building 36 high speed interceptor boats for Rs 977 Crores. The first boat is scheduled for delivery in 18 months.
