LUISS University is an independent university set up by a consortium of private and public companies that reorganised a pre-existing institution, Pro Deo, founded in 1966. The university consists of three faculties: Economics
, Law
and Political Science
. The University was ranked 6th in an Italian university ranking by The Vision Working-group in 2010.
In 1974 a group of businessmen led by Umberto Agnelli
decided to invest people and money in a project for the education and training of a managerial class. In later years, the founders were joined by other important public- and private-sector industrial groups and banks.
In 1977 the University officially changed its name to Libera Università Internazionale degli Studi Sociali – LUISS. A year later the then chairman of the Italian Confederation of Industry (Confindustria), Guido Carli, was appointed as President of the University. He remained President of the University until his death in 1993.
In 1982, LUISS expanded and a Law faculty was added.
In 1986, LUISS Business School was created.
In 1994, the Board of Directors decided to name the university after Guido Carli death.
In 1997, LUISS Management S.p.A. was set up to cater for market-oriented education.
In 2010, the LUISS School of Government was created.
LUISS stands for Libera Università Internazionale degli Studi Sociali, that is Free International University for Social Studies.
In 1994, the Board of Directors renamed the University in the memory of its former President, Guido Carli: LUISS Guido Carli.
