Lake Gardens is a relatively new suburb on the western rural-urban fringe of Ballarat

located near Lake Wendouree
and directly behind the Ballarat Botanical Gardens
from which the suburb draws its name. The suburb is bounded by Gilles Street to the east, O'Donnell's Road to the west and Gregory Street West to the north. The population at the 2006 census was 1,751.
Built on the site of the former Lakeside Mental Hospital
, the Lake Gardens Estate was subdivided prior to 2002 when the first land sales occurred and as a result consists completely of contemporary housing, primarily large detached homes in the neo-eclectic architecture
style. Some claim that the suburb is said to be haunted by ghosts of the former mental hospital.
Lake Gardens is almost entirely residential. It has no commercial area in Lake Gardents and the nearest shopping centres are in Wendouree to the north and Alfredton to the south.
A bus service runs the Lake Gardens route (16) along these roads and via Johns Wood between the Ballarat CBD and Stockland Shopping Centre in Wendouree.
Wendouree railway station, opened in 2009 is located immediately next to the suburb in Wendouree.
