The school building was constructed in 1949 and opened in January, 1950 and it was extensively expanded in the 1990s. The alternative 90-student Northstar Junior High is on the same campus, and have their own section in the building. Lake Washington High School's colors are purple and white and the mascot is the kangaroo

House system

. In this system, all the students are put into one of four houses (Earth, Wind, Fire, Water.) Students will attend required classes in their assigned house.

Construction of new building

Beginning at the end of the 2007-2008 school year, the campus has undergone severe construction work to clear a space for and build a new building. The design of the building is to go along with the newly implemented house system. The new gym was completed before the end of the 2009-2010 school year with the rest to follow soon afterward. At the beginning of the 2011-2012 school year the entire school was finished except the student parking lot, which is still under construction.
