LME was founded in 1921 by Vincent Wren. The company began with Mr. Wren collecting milk from small dairy farms dotting the landscape around the suburban community of Lakeville, Minnesota

In 2008 LME launched its partnership called The Reliance Network (TRNET), to create a unified, across-the-continent coalition for all freight services. Commercial Carrier Journal Magazine named LME "2009 Innovator of the Year" for its work on forming the Reliance Network.
