days before his death on October 15, 1992, he had identified Lakhbir as the mastermind behind the Air India 182 (Kanishka) bombing on June 23, 1985. However, this has been disputed by Canadian investigators, who say they had talked to Lakhbir and that he is unlikely to be the Mr.X who, together with Inderjit Singh Reyat is likely to have masterminded the bombing.

Tehelka also reports that Lakhbir might have been an Indian agent at the time.
