The Landmark Aids Centre is a day centre in London
which offers treatment and support for AIDS
sufferers. It was officially opened on 25 July 1989 by Diana, Princess of Wales
. At a time when police dealing with AIDS sufferers still wore gloves, Diana created a media frenzy by shaking the hands of a patient at the unit.
was born in 1961 as the third daughter of her father, Edward John Spencer and his wife Frances Ruth Burke Roche. She was raised by a very wealthy and high-class family that was close to the royal family. In 1975, Diana’s father became the 8th Earl of Spencer and thus being she gained the title, “Lady.” Her mother had an affair which in result them getting a divorce. This was the year of 1969. Eventually though they got back together but the divorce left emotional scars. Diana went to West Heath School in Kent but finished her schooling in Switzerland. Even though her grades weren’t the best, her dedication and personality got her through it. After school, Diana worked with children at the Young England Kindergarten. She began dating Prince Charles during the mid 80’s. It wasn’t too long until the couple got engaged which was on February 24, 1981. It was one of the biggest weddings of the decade; nearly 3,500 people attended and about 750 million people from around the world watched from their television sets. The date of their marriage was July 29, 1981 at St. Paul’s Cathedral. Diana gave birth to William Arthur Philip Louis on June 21, 1982, less than a year after the wedding. Two years after her first born, Diana gave birth to Henry Charles Albert David on September 15, 1984. She started to get depressed about the extra media and all the overwhelming things she had to go through. She started to suffer from bulimia; she cut herself, and also had made several suicide attempts. Diana’s husband got jealous her attention to the media so he started to back off of her and leave her alone to handle things on her own. She was the most photographed person in the world. She made a huge impact with AIDS by making a Centre. The two finally got divorced which was announced in December 1992 and was agreed to be finalized in August. She had to give up her, “Royal Highness.” Unfortunately, she did not live long after being separated. On August 31, 1997, Diana was riding with her boyfriend (Dodi Al Fayed), bodyguard, and chauffer when the car crashed into a pillar of the tunnel under the Pont de l’Alma bridge in Paris. Lying dead on the operating table at the hospital, she was only 36. Further investigation proved that the reason they crashed was because her chauffer had been drinking and using drugs.
It is caused by the Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV) and there is no known cure.

History
In 1989, Diana, Princess of Wales, opened a new Aids centre in south-east London. This was the first time a high profile member of the Royal Family was going to attempt to destigmatise the condition. The Landmark Aids Centre will offer advice and support on topics on issues from housing to dietary needs. Diana spent longs hours with women in discussion groups about the centre. She said, "I think it's terrible what they have to go through." The first case of Acquired Immune Deficiency was discovered in 1981 as a medical condition. That same year a doctor named Tony pinching diagnosed the first case in the UK, in a heterosexual women. By the end of 1984, 108 were already suffering from the disease and 46 had died. In 1985 the Health Department had reported Aid cases in 51 countries. Two years later Diana opened the country's first Aids ward at Middlesex Hospital.
