, and is spoken as a first language by 97.7% of its population. Armenian belongs to an independent branch of the Indo-European language family. It is a highly inflective language, with a complicated system of declensions. Modern Armenian is agglutinative, rich in consonants, and has no grammatical gender. There are two main dialects: Eastern Armenian, the official language of Armenia, and Western Armenian spoken mainly in the Armenian Diaspora. The alphabet, patterned after Pahlavi and Greek letters, has 38 characters (initially 36). Surviving Armenian literature dates from the early 5th century ad.
