During the 1990s the hospital was owned by HealthSouth Corporation and was known as HealthSouth Larkin Hospital. HealthSouth had obtained ownership of the hospital when it bought the HealthSouth Doctors Hospital in Coral Gables, Florida
. The hospital was not one HealthSouth intended to keep and lost money each year starting in 1992, causing it to be sold to a group led by Dr. Jack J. Michel 1998. In an effort to become profitable, Larkin opened its first outpatient treatment center in 1998, rotating 10 of its doctors to the shopping-center based facility to offer general medical care for adults and children, as well as cardiology services.
On October 15, 2010, Larkin Community Hospital was designated a health professional shortage area or Area of Critical Need by the United States Department of Health and Human Services.
Larkin Community Hospital launched the first expansion in post graduate medical education programs in decades for South Florida. Larkin received accreditation from the AOA for new post graduate medical education slots for residency programs in Family Practice and Psychiatry, starting in July 2010. The significant academic affiliations with universities, prominent hospitals and FQHCs will contribute to the successful operation of these training programs.
"Larkin is hereby committed to provide the proper resources to ensure that formal-quality training programs be conducted at the institution in compliance with the requirements of accrediting councils. We are looking to position our hospital as a leader in medical education. We want to help train the next generation of board certified physicians in our community" said Sandy Sosa Guerrero, Larkin's CEO.
