Lateral funiculus
Encyclopedia
The most lateral of the bundles of the anterior nerve roots is generally taken as a dividing line that separates the antero-lateral region into two parts, viz., an anterior funiculus
, between the anterior median fissure
and the most lateral of the anterior nerve roots; and a lateral funiculus, between the exit of these roots and the postero-lateral sulcus.
Each lateral funiculus transmits the contralateral corticospinal and spinothalamic tracts. A hemisection of the spinal cord results in transection of both ipsilateral dorsal column and lateral funiculus; this produces Brown-Sequard syndrome.
