The Latin Grammy Award for Best Salsa Album is an honor presented annually at the Latin Grammy Awards, a ceremony that recognizes excellence and creates a wider awareness of cultural diversity and contributions of Latin recording artists in the United States and internationally .
The award goes to solo artists, duos, or groups for releasing vocal or instrumental albums containing at least 51% of new recordings .
Puerto Rican artists have received this award more than anyother nationality thought it has also been presented to artists originating from Cuba and the United States three times and from Panama and Nicaragua once.
The award was first presented to Cuban singer Celia Cruz
for the album Celia Cruz and Friends: A Night of Salsa at the 1st Latin Grammy Awards ceremony
in 2000 . She is also the biggest winner in this category with three awards. Other multiple winners are El Gran Combo de Puerto Rico, Marc Anthony
and Gilberto Santa Rosa
each with two awards. Santa Rosa also holds the record for most nominations with nine in total. Venezuelan musician Oscar D'León
holds the record for most nominations without a win with five.
