before becoming Assistant Chief of the General Staff
in 1983. He went on to be Assistant Chief of the Defence Staff in 1984 before retiring in 1985. He was also Colonel Commandant of the Royal Tank Regiment from 1986 to 1993.
In retirement he became Lieutenant Governor of the Isle of Man
. He was also President of the Soldiers’ and Airmen’s Scripture Readers Association and International President of the Association of Military Christian Fellowships and has written a history of the 4th and 7th Royal Tank Regiments.
