, who would become a U.S. Senator. In 1871 Daniel R. Anthony (brother of Susan B. Anthony

) bought the newspaper. In that year Anthony shot and killed a rival publisher R.C. Satterlee of the Kansas Herald. A jury absolved him. In 1875 Anthony was shot at the Leavenworth Opera House by rival editor William Embry, editor of the Daily Appeal. He survived and the Anthony family continued to publish the newspaper until the 1960s.

The Thomson Corporation bought the Leavenworth Times in 1966; they sold the paper, along with 11 other papers, to the American Publishing Company (later Hollinger International
