The Lebanese of Sweden are people from Lebanon
or those of Lebanese descent, around 21,000, who live in the country of Sweden
. They come from various ethnic and religious backgrounds. They may be mainstream Lebanese people or from Lebanese communities of various ethnic backgrounds, such as Arabs, Armenians
, Assyrians/Syriacs/Chaldeans.
The majority of Lebanese came in the 1970s and 1980s, either escaping the Lebanese Civil War
or for economic reasons. Lebanon, alongside Iraq
and Syria
, became one of the sources of influx of political asylum refugees for people of ethnic Syriac/Assyrian and Kurdish backgrounds.
The Lebanese have set up their own traditional cultural and political organizations, including the Swedish Lebanese Friendship Association (SLFA). There is a Lebanese embassy in Stockholm.
Most Lebanese in Sweden belong to various Christian denominations (Maronite, Greek Orthodox, Greek Catholic, Syriac Orthodox, Syriac Catholic, Armenian Apostolic), but there is also a sizable number of Muslims (Sunni and Shi'a).
