He exploited Hunter's absence and narrowly (12:12, countback win) beat Tor Hamer
(Hamer's only amateur loss) in March 2008 to become US champion. In May at the 2008 Golden Gloves he lost the rematch to eventual winner Hamer.
At the 2009 Golden Gloves he won this tournament, too, besting Bryant Jennings in the final. In May 2010 he decisioned Randall Blankenship at the Regional Finals in Tulsa, Oklahoma.
He defeated Danny Kelly in Colorado Springs on July 17, 2010 to retake the USA Boxing Championship.
