Libertatea (The Liberty in Romanian
) is a Romanian tabloid newspaper published in Bucharest
. Libertatea was the first newspaper that appeared after Romanian Revolution, the first edition was in 22 December 1989 at midday, first newspaper announcing the people the fact the president dictator, Nicolae Ceausescu fled the capital with an helicopter. The former newspaper was named 'Informaţia Bucureştiului'. Sorin Rosca Stanescu was a journalist at the former newspaper and worked with Octavian Andronic, the founder of Libertatea on the new newspaper.
Libertatea was transformed in a tabloid in 1994 when it was bought by Ringier. Nowadays it features a bikini girl as the "Page Five Girl
". The newspaper is generally socially progressive
in values and has a social liberal political viewpoint, in line with its title.
In 2005, Libertatea reported that a child was allegedly named after web portal Yahoo (Lucian Yahoo Dragoman
), this story being taken by various newspapers across the world, but turned out to be a hoax article made by a Libertatea reporter. It has become more and more obvious in the past years, that the newspaper focuses on hoaxes instead of real news in order to increase its sales.
