. It is situated within the eastern Innerste Uplands
, approx. 12 km (7.5 mi) north of Goslar
.
as the seat of the local administration (Amt). It was occupied by Duke Henry V the Younger of Brunswick-Wolfebüttel
in 1523, who in turn lost it to the Schmalkaldic League
from 1542 until 1547. Heavily damaged in the Thirty Years' War
, the castle was restored to Hildesheim and rebuilt in a Baroque
style by the order of Prince-Bishop Clemens August of Bavaria
from 1750 on.
