Pre-parliamentary career

She was brought up in Bolton, Lancashire, where she attended Canon Slade School before going up to St. Catharine's College, Cambridge. She moved to Southwell in Nottinghamshire in 1999. She worked in Nottingham for the public sector trade union, UNISON for 17 years prior to 2010.

Parliament

She was selected as the Labour Party candidate for the 2010 UK General Election after the incumbent Labour MP, Alan Simpson, announced in 2007 that he would not stand for re-election. She was elected with 37.3% of the vote; a majority of 4.4% over her closest rival.

In July 2010, she was appointed to the Transport Select Committee. She was subsequently appointed as an Assistant Whip.

In late September 2011, she was asked by Ed Milliband (Shadow Primeminister of the Labour Party) to take the role of Shadow Minister of Transport.
