He set fast legitimate fractions on the lead of :23 flat, :46-2/5 and 1:11-3/5 for the first 1/4, 1/2 and 3/4 of a mile. Lincoln Road led by a half length rounding the club house turn and then drew clear down the back stretch by two lengths. Around the final turn he was heavily restrained by his jockey C. Rogers but widened his lead to three lengths. In the stretch his arch rival Tim Tam
bore down, cutting into the lead with every stride. Lincoln Road showed a fine response when roused sharply in the stretch but was no match for Tim Tam, losing by one and a quarter lengths. He was much better than the other ten horses, finishing a full three and a half lengths in front of third place finisher Gone Fishin.
Later that year Lincoln Road again finished as the runner-up in both the Biscayne Bay Handicap and the Stars And Stripes Handicap at Arlington Park
