History

The Links Club was started in 1926 by four founding members: C G RIP Mayer from Electrical Engineering, F J John Millard from Civil Engineering, GHN Bobbie Mayes from Electrical Engineering and J G Percy Shelley from Mechanical Engineering. The first meeting of the Club was held in October and in December a further eight members were elected.

The Club was founded on three main principles:

1. The furtherance of the interests and welfare of the Club and of the City and Guilds College

2. The promotion of friendship and good fellowship amongst the Members of the Club

3. Organising events and functions that will encourage this spirit

Over the years, these three simple principles have been upheld in different ways. When the Club was founded, the City and Guilds College was largely a day College where most of the student went home or to rooms locally; as a result, there was very little organised social life. Initially, The Club organised and contributed to social events and as a result, the Student Unions of the City and Guilds and of Imperial College flourished rapidly after a boost from the Links Club.

In more recent times, The Club has continued to contribute to the social life of the College, with their events sometimes being described as boisterous. As well as the social life, The Club has set up a sporting scholarship for students of the Faculty Engineering and have also organised several charitable events, raising money for a variety of causes.

Membership is by election, based on Sportsmanship as defined by the members at College. Each member has a link (originally silver) on a chain that starts with the four original members.
There are about 1000 Links. Each link has the name and Club Name of the member and the year and month of initiation. Members are now spread all around the World, with informal groups in Australia, South Africa, Zimbabwe, Canada and USA.

Many of the members have excelled in the engineering field, both academic and industrial, with seven Links being Knighted, mainly for services to British Engineering.

Regalia

The Club colours are Light Blue, Dark Red, Pink and Dark Blue. The Club tie and/or other regalia with the Club colours may be worn anytime but shall be worn on Thursday and official club occasions.
