Whiteford broke into the victims' retail store premises and perpetrated his attack in the attached rear residence. The motive appeared to be robbery. Prior to leaving the premises he set fire to the building. This caused limited internal damage before being brought under control, and the building still stands and remains in use as a retail store to this day in October 2011. (Ref "The Age" March 25 1964)
