and former member Chicago
. The current Big Ten teams have compiled 21 NCAA
championships (as of May 29, 2011). In the most recently completed 2010-11 academic year, Big Ten members won five titles: in women's volleyball
to give Penn State an NCAA-unprecedented fourth consecutive national championship, in wrestling
for the same school giving a team east of the Mississippi River its first national championship since 1967, in women's ice hockey crowning Wisconsin

† Helms Athletic Foundation
National Champion, not NCAA. In 1936 the Helms Athletic Foundation
was formed and retroactively compiled a list of college basketball champions for the previous 35 years. For 10 of the years that followed the formation of the Western Conference (the Big Ten's original name), a Big Ten team was selected: 1907-09, 1912, 1914-16, 1919, 1931-32. Indiana's 1940 NCAA championship was not recognized by Helms, which selected USC instead. Chicago's 1908 national title was won in a championship series against the University of Pennsylvania.
Trampoline (2)
Until 1969, trampoline was one of the events that comprised the NCAA men's gymnastics championships. At that time, the event was removed in order to conform to the international gymnastics itinerary. The NCAA continued to bestow a national title in trampoline for two years.
