List of NASCAR fatal accidents
Encyclopedia
This is a list of NASCAR fatal accidents, which consists of all the drivers who have died during a NASCAR
weekend, or elsewhere while driving a stock car. It does not include NASCAR races held before the inauguration of the Strickly Stock Series in 1949 or any spectators and crew members either. This list includes all of the series, including the Nationwide Series, Camping World Truck Series, Whelen Modified Tour
, Mexico Corona Series. It also includes former series like Sportsman Series (before and after 1982), Grand American
, Convertible Division
and Goody's Dash Series prior to 2004.
Eight drivers died in the 1950s and 1960s; five in the 1970s; thirteen in the 1980s; ten in the 1990s, eight in the 2000s and none thus far in the 2010s. There are three drivers (Don Williams, Bruce Jacobi
, and Rick Baldwin
) who died years after their accident. Drivers from the Sprint Cup Series have had the most fatal accidents with twenty-six and only three drivers outside the United States
have died in NASCAR. The sport has changed some of the safety including SAFER Barriers and the HANS device
in order to prevent these from happening again.
