Zak Walker is once again late for school and Head of English, Grantly Budgen has had enough of his tardiness. He confides in Andrew that he thinks Zak's problem could be drug related.

He's aggressive and suggestive and Kim begins to panic. They are totally alone with no witnesses - how far will Lewis go? Meanwhile Izzie wants Tom to tell Lorna about their relationship.

It is the final day of reckoning for Waterloo Road as they await the decision of the LEA - will they close the school? Tensions are running very high. Kim is severely traumatised after the incident with bully Lewis. She has doubts as to whether she can continue teaching, but Andrew is determined not to let her leave Waterloo Road. It's icy in the staffroom between Lorna and Izzie. Lorna puts a tough face on, but beneath her cool exterior she feels her life has lost all meaning.

Series 3 (2007–08)

With the success of Series 2, an extended 20-part third series was commissioned and began airing from six months later from October 2007. Episodes 1-10 aired from October–December 2007 before the programme broke transmission over Christmas. Episodes 11-20 aired from January–March 2008.

She informs her stunned friends they're together and won't need to keep their love secret anymore after this day. Janeece ignores her friends warnings and leaves for a hotel for their first time, while the teachers find it hard to reconcile their growing suspicions about a sexual predator in their midst with the popular and competent Wilson.

Sameen's not going without a fight.

Rob Cleaver is adamant that Bolton’s about to be Rochdale’s next Rocky and a loved up Jasmine is bursting with pride for her man. However, Bolton’s nerves are getting to him and so Rob offers him some help – a bottle of ‘legal’ pills. It’s also the day Eddie and Melissa are due to fly out to Barbados to get married, but things don’t quite go to plan and both Rachel and Eddie are left reeling when the truth finally comes out.

Kim can’t wait to get stuck into work, but the planned careers day, involving former pupils of Waterloo Road, is thrown into chaos with the arrival of Jordan-esque glamour model, Sarah-Leanne. Kim finds herself battling with Sarah-Leanne to win the hearts and minds of her celebrity-obsessed students.

Kim’s day starts badly when the uncle of her baby, Grace, shows up at the school threatening to expose a secret about his niece. Kim struggles to keep her personal life from impacting on her job as she tries to get rid of him. Desperate, she turns to Steph, who is immediately suspicious. With Kim’s eye off the ball, Karla Bentham becomes the victim of Michaela White’s scheme to make money, and another type of bullying. It’s a race against time for Kim to recover Karla before her own situation is exposed.

Can he and Steph pull out the stops and re-write another song in time to still take part? Back at the school, a loved-up Eddie is totally gob smacked to find Melissa waiting for him. He’s in for a further shock when she reveals that she’s pregnant.

Series 5 (2009–10)

A 20-part fifth series was commissioned in March 2009. Filming began on 11 May 2009 and began airing from Wednesday 28 October 2009 (Sunday 25 October on BBC One Scotland). Due to extensive news coverage on 11 May 2010, EastEnders and Holby City were instead shown on 12 May, and Waterloo Road was postponed for 2 weeks, due to the already scheduled Holby City episode on 19 May. The final two episodes of the series was delayed by 4 weeks, due to the World Cup, airing on 14 & 15 July respectively.

The playground divisions are echoed in the staffroom as many of the old John Fosters team have been ushered in to ensure the smooth transition, much to the annoyance of the existing staff. The hostility between the ex-John Fosters pupils and their Waterloo Road peers continues unabated. Tensions increase when Amy Porter accuses Bolton of attempted rape after luring him into the girls’ toilets for a tryst; an accusation that a bewildered Bolton is quick to deny. New girl Lindsay James is quick to use the incident as another example that Waterloo Road pupils are trouble, happy to have a distraction from her father’s funeral which is taking place that day. Meanwhile Tom finds that his past is being unearthed thanks to Josh Stevenson.

Danielle and Aleesha stagger into school after a night out drinking in Rochdale's bars and clubs. Danielle, in particular, is suffering, so Paul steals some ethanol from the science lab in order to help her out with a "hair of the dog". Paul and Bolton start bootlegging the ethanol to the other pupils, not realising how dangerous the side effects of their concoction could be. Max Tyler soon discovers their scam but it's too late for barely conscious Danielle, who is rushed to hospital by Steph. Could Steph's lack of judgment prove to have serious consequences for both of them? While this goes on, Rachel and Max's relationship deteriorates and Tom discovers that Josh is indeed his son.

Josh's attempts to push his mum and dad together results in an admission by his mum and Steph tries to piece together what took place the night before.

Cassie's best friends, Lauren Andrews and Sambuca, are hurt that she didn't go to them for help, but also believe she is being bullied. Helen Hopewell continues to struggle to stamp her authority on her pupils while Josh discovers the truth about his conception.

Sick of fighting a turf war with Max, a defeated Rachel hands in her resignation, believing her departure will at least provide some stability at Waterloo Road. However, Rachel's nephew, Phillip Ryan admits that Max has been abusive towards him and Kim reveals it all. Meanwhile Ruby runs an eventful talent show and Josh decides he wants to take a big step with Tom.

What Grantly doesn't realise is that there is a court order out against Gary, banning him from having unsupervised access to his children. Meanwhile, new pupil Finn Sharkey makes his presence felt, quickly making friends with Josh and Amy through his lack of respect for boundaries.

Run by Mark Moran, the older brother of year 10 pupil Craig, the farm is in deep financial trouble. Mark had asked Craig to cancel the trip as the farm is in no state for visitors but Craig “forgot”; he was hoping Ruby would see how much trouble they were in and help convince Mark to sell up.

Kim and Chris come to blows over his introduction of an APU (Advanced Preparation for University) scheme for Ros, the school's brightest pupil. It's a battle of wills, won when Michaela stages a protest demanding to be allowed on the scheme and Rachel opens it up to everyone. Elsewhere, overweight pupil Aidan causes difficulties and Rachel searches for a new Healthy Eating Head, but gets a blast from the past.

Josh's treatment of Lauren leads to Tom's first disappointment in his son. Ruby organises a fashion swap and Grantly seems to be displaying textbook symptoms of depression.

In retaliation, Chris sets Finn up by giving him full authority in a classroom of year 12s, resulting in Finn being laughed at by the sixth formers who don't take him seriously. Sambuca elopes from her sports shop work experience to spend time with Bolton.

New boy Finn's disruptive behaviour continues at Waterloo Road and he persuades Josh and Amy to join him in smoking a legal high. For Amy, it's a far-from-pleasant experience and Josh has further side-effects when he starts hallucinating in class. Tom, worried about his son's behaviour, questions Josh who "fesses" up – believing that his dad would be cool about it as they are more like friends than father and son. However, Josh is stunned and humiliated by Tom's angry reaction and, in retaliation, he spikes Tom's lunch with the drug. Rachel's day of absence leaves Chris in charge with an important visitor and Adam, head of the Healthy Eating Programme, gives Ruby a helping hand.

Jo angrily denies any feelings and in retaliation Ros formally accuses Jo of acting inappropriately. Rachel has no choice but to suspend Jo, leaving her questioning her future at Waterloo Road. Chris feels his APU scheme is under threat while Adam launches a takeaway food service.

Kim is jealous and when Chris tells his friend that he's in love with Kim, she confronts her, after which Kim goes into premature labour alone and helpless. Rachel announces she's engaged to Adam, whilst Ruby moves into a rundown flat, still taking medication.

Finn and Amy's relationship takes a terrifying turn and Rachel must decide where her future lies. When Finn's parents tell him they're moving to Los Angeles, his relationship with Amy looks doomed. Amy is later stunned when he proposes they make a suicide pact, rather than live without each other. A nervous Amy, who has become so dependent on him, agrees and they head off to an isolated beach. Meanwhile Steph with the help of Oliver organises the school prom. Rachel ties the knot with Adam and later on decides that Waterloo Road can survive without her.

In August 2010, a further 20-part sixth series was commissioned. Filming began on 9 November 2009 and finished on 7 May 2010. It began airing on BBC One from 1 September 2010. The series took a break from 27 October 2010 and continue on from Episode 11 from 2 February 2011.

Marcus's ex-wife, Hannah, wants her children to experience mainstream schooling, but he has little faith in the state education system. While Jonah relishes the opportunity to make new friends and have new experiences, high-achiever Ruth feels she's got little to learn and soon takes matters into her own hands by running away.

Harry dials the number on the text and is shocked to hear new Spanish teacher Cesca answer. He desperately enlists Sambuca's help and they follow Charlie on his lunchtime rendezvous. Together they spy on Charlie with Cesca, taking a photo as evidence. When Harry later tells Karen she refuses to believe him and assures him that it must be innocent.

Waterloo Road is running a new sexual health initiative which includes a confidential emergency contraception service. This causes consternation among parents and staff alike. Ronan and his girlfriend, Sarah, are concerned; their condom broke during sex, but while Ronan wants Sarah to take the morning-after pill, she's too mortified to go to the nurse. Jess also has cause for concern: her promiscuous behaviour has resulted in her needing the morning-after pill – again. Unable to go to the nurse herself, Jess persuades Vicki to get the pill for her. Vicki reluctantly agrees, but fails when the nurse realises she's not there for herself. The two girls get into a huge fight which results in Vicki revealing Jess's promiscuity in front of Chris. Chris is concerned for Jess's welfare but she misinterprets this as a sign that he still cares for her.

Tensions are running high at Waterloo Road as the Fishers struggle to stay united on the annual celebration of Bex's birthday. In addition, the arrival of a new, gay student sparks confrontation and unearths some difficult truths. Reluctant to return Lauren's advances, an increasingly confused Josh directs his frustration towards new student Connor with a homophobic insult. But a much deeper issue is revealed when he tries to kiss Finn, who is disgusted with his friend's behaviour and quickly spreads word of it throughout the school. Following a fight, the two friends are forced to explain their actions to Tom and Charlie. However, Josh denies the kiss ever happened, much to Tom's relief, and later tries to prove everyone wrong by getting physical with Lauren.

After catching Ronan selling DVDs in class, and brimming with ideas about improving parent-teacher relationships, Marcus takes it upon himself to visit Ronan's father at home. A seemingly upstanding businessman, Ronan's father is upset that his son is selling his possessions, and both he and Marcus assume Ronan must be in some sort of trouble. However, it soon becomes clear that Marcus hasn't grasped the full picture and Ronan is in fact saving the money to flee Rochdale and escape his father's illicit family business. Events reach boiling point in the corridors of Waterloo Road and Ronan is forced to make a decision that will change his life forever. Meanwhile Josh is still struggling to come to terms with his coming out, and things are not helped by Tom's interference.

Cesca's honest approach in her drugs-awareness class backfires when Sam comes to her asking for money to buy drugs. Sam's intentions are good, however; she wants to buy the drugs from Amy and Lauren and then throw them away in order to protect her friends. The ever-manipulative Amy doesn't trust Sam and hatches an elaborate plan to frame her. Facing exclusion, Sam relies on the honesty of her best friend, Lauren, while Cesca's reputation lies in tatters as Karen struggles to unravel the truth.

Events reach a climax when Harry sinks to the bottom of the pool during a swimming lesson, a cry for help that leads both him and Finn to Karen's office. When Harry is finally forced to reveal his condition, Karen is left questioning her role as a mother.

Following another poor exam result, a concerned Chris confronts Vicki, but she won't reveal the true extent of her dire situation and threatens Chris with blackmail if her grades are not changed. Finally, they strike a deal that helps Vicki but leaves Chris's career hanging in the balance.

When Chris launches a trial scheme to equip the classrooms with CCTV there is uproar among both staff and pupils. Jonah is outraged when he learns that the staff room doesn't have a camera and hatches a plan to expose the hypocrisy of the scheme, unwittingly stumbling upon Jess's and Chris's secret in the process. A violent clash in the corridors of Waterloo Road ensues, and Chris and Jonah attempt to cover up the truth in Karen's office.

Grantly's desperation reaches breaking point as he makes a huge mistake in the classroom and discovers the full cost of Fleur's care. All hell breaks loose among the A-Level students when they realise that Grantly has been teaching them the wrong syllabus all year – a mistake punishable with severe disciplinary action by Karen. Back at home, the situation worsens as Grantly discovers the financial cost of Fleur's care and hatches a desperate plan in order to raise the money. Steph offers her support, and Grantly is blessed with some end-of-term charity when the full extent of his wife's illness becomes clear to Karen and the school.

In response to the boys' poor exam grades, Karen and Chris introduce a new single-sex teaching initiative, much to the disdain of staff and pupils. The party gets off to a good start but events escalate out of control, and it is up to Tom to save the day. Back at Waterloo Road, Cesca makes a life-changing discovery that turns her world upside down and leaves Jonah planning to abandon his education. Later, however, Jonah turns up at the party in a jubilant mood but his irresponsible behaviour leaves Cesca questioning his maturity. When Ronan teams up with Bex, Jess and Vicki for the event, he notices Vicki's lack of confidence and convinces Dan to single her out for attention. However, his well-intended plan soon spirals out of control. Cesca goes to a clinic to have a termination while Jonah tries to dissuade her.

It's the day of the Waterloo Road pantomime and there's drama both on and off-stage as Finn gets Kyle purposely kicked off the cast, Cesca and Jonah rush to get married and Denzil's latest stunt ends in tragedy. When Finn goads Kyle into a fight, he gets Kyle kicked off the cast and takes the leading role himself – much to Sam's disgust. The bickering continues between Finn and Sam and, as the script veers unexpectedly off course, Kyle and Denzil exact an explosive payback, sending Adanna's good intentions up in smoke.

New teachers Eleanor Chaudry and Daniel Chalk want to make a good impression, but the kids aren't going to give them an easy ride. "Chalky" is instantly marked out as a soft target, while Ms Chaudry's strict rules land Sambuca Kelly in the "cooler". What Eleanor sees as unruly behaviour in Sambuca is just a personality clash according to Tom, but her erratic behaviour gives cause for concern.

But his solution to Vicki's dilemma causes more problems than it solves, as Ronan takes the blame for their rash actions. It's the day of Sam's memorial service and everyone's on edge. As Finn empties Sam's locker Lauren and Amy help him to appreciate the sentimental value of the little things that are left behind. At the memorial service Denzil struggles with his grief, especially when new girl Scout inadvertently steals Sam's jumper, while Jess makes her own shock admission.

Karen starts to doubt Chris's judgement when he tries to help newcomer Scout. She's unwashed, hungry and sleeping in class, and when Chris finds out that she's working as a drug courier he steps in to rescue her from her feckless family. The staff worry about redundancies as a warning notice is served on Waterloo Road, but Karen assures them she intends to appeal against it. With Eleanor Chaudry still spying on the school, Richard Whitman has plenty of inside knowledge that could help him close down the school.

But he's quickly sucked back in to dealing with Scout's dysfunctional life as her mum leaves her and brother Liam home alone.

With Scout and her brother Liam's mum still missing they face being taken into care. Scout takes matters into her own hands and decides to run away. But with the police, Chris and a drug dealer in pursuit, it's not going to be easy.

New pupil Freddie is hoping to make a full recovery after his heart transplant but his enthusiasm about being back in mainstream school makes him an easy target in class and he brushes up against Denzil and Phoenix who think he's a little "freak". Meanwhile, Scout and Emily's rebellious behaviour continues and they both get matching tattoos. Ronan and Finn try to mend their broken hearts by planning to get some girls at Phoenix's house party, but this goes wrong when Finn gets drunk and embarrasses himself in front of Trudi. Chalky has more luck in love when Linda, jealous of Michael and Sian, agrees to go on a date with him. After an awkward start, they end up having a fun night.

Everyone's excited about having a masterclass in radio journalism from a chat show supremo; everyone, that is, except her daughter Andi, a loner in Scout and Emily's class, who shies away from her mum's limelight. Sian and Michael wake up late, having spent the night together in a hotel. Jez, meanwhile, is trying to move past his suspicions but he steals Sian's car keys to check her GPS, only to discover that she has lied about her whereabouts and had really been at a hotel. He confronts Sian, who breaks down with guilt and confesses to the affair. Trudi gets a raw deal from Finn when it accidentally comes out that her dad has marriage plans for her with a family friend. And Tariq comes to Chalky's aid when he burns his surprise dinner for Linda.

The last day of term starts badly for Michael when he finds a threatening note on the dashboard of his car. Meanwhile, Jez's unexpected arrival during the staff briefing scuppers any hope that the prize-giving will be the focus of the day. Grantly informs a rattled Michael that Jez will be making a formal complaint to the governors about his affair with Sian and matters come to a head when Jez pulls Madi and Zack out of class to take them to Ireland. As they drive off, Wayne slips in to school with revenge on his mind and Michael finally gets a chance to confront his stalker. Elsewhere, Emily tries desperately to prevent Scout from moving away with her foster parents and Ronan and Vicki say goodbye to Waterloo Road.
