Many of the current route numbers have historical origins dating back many years. For example in the 1970s many Bolton/Lancashire United routes were prefixed with a 5 (for example Route 59 Bolton to Wigan became 559),many of those in Wigan and Leigh were prefixed with a 6 and so on. Historically, the route numbers were allocated to the areas of Greater Manchester, with the creation of SELNEC
in 1969.
